Learn how to configure Google Chrome settings and use quick shortcuts to stop Chrome from automatically opening PDFs, images, and audio files in browser tabs instead of downloading to disk.
1. Change Chrome PDF Download Settings
Navigate to chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments in your Chrome address bar and select "Download PDFs" instead of "Open PDFs in Chrome". This will ensure that clicking any PDF link automatically downloads the document to your local disk.
2. Clear "Always Open Files of This Type"
If Chrome automatically launches external viewer apps or tabs right after downloading, go to chrome://settings/downloads and click Clear next to "Open certain file types automatically after downloading".
3. Why Chrome Previews Files in New Tabs by Default
Google Chrome inspects the HTTP Content-Type and Content-Disposition headers sent by the remote web server. If the server does not specify Content-Disposition: attachment, Chrome assumes you want to view the content immediately using its built-in PDF reader, audio player, or image renderer.

4. Quick Chrome Download Shortcuts
- Alt + Click (Windows/Linux) / Option + Click (Mac): Holding down the Alt (or Option) key while clicking any hyperlink tells Chrome to download the target URL directly.
- Right-Click ➔ "Save Link As...": Right-clicking any hyperlink gives you direct control over the destination folder and filename before downloading.
